How Meditating Can Save You Money

I started a meditation practice when I was pregnant with my son four years ago. Little did I know that it would be something that ended up saving me a ton of money.

For those of you who are completely new to mediation, I want to say the following:

  • meditation does not have to be hard

  • mediation can be done anywhere

  • meditation does not have to be done for a certain amount of time

  • you will have thoughts while you are meditating

  • the goal with meditation, at least for me, is to slow and quiet my mind and body, to feel refreshed, reset, and at peace with my being

When we begin to learn how to sit down with ourselves daily, to turn in and really get to know who we are, something amazing happens. Many amazing things happen.

Most notably, for me, was the transition I took from a material world to a spiritual one. As a result, I found myself spending less and less money.

Here’s why:

What I Crave Cannot Be Purchased

It didn’t happen overnight, but as I ventured off on this journey and started digging deeper, my eyes were opened to what really matters. Of course, the catalyst for this was giving birth to my children. Seeing God work through me. Seeing those tiny hands and feet. Feeling the power of the entire Universe in every one of my bones as my children emerged. Becoming a mother was an excruciating reality check, in the best way possible. I woke up quickly to what mattered most. And it was no longer what could be purchased at the mall or ordered online. While I used to crave things like Starbucks and Macy’s, I now look forward to things like morning hugs and kisses, reciting my new and full moon mantras and witnessing God’s work in my life.

The Need To Consume Is Replaced

As we should all realize, we are being marketed to incessantly, We are being force fed how to dress, what to eat, which cars to drive. We are brainwashed and conditioned to believe these things matter. We judge others based on their appearances, their material possessions. WHY? Maybe if we chose friends based off of their ability to make us laugh until we cry instead of spend until we cry (lol, but seriously), we would be able to build relationships that last.

When I began a meditation ritual, I found myself longing for education, guidance, and acceptance. I was no longer filling a void with a new pair of shoes or feeling better about myself with a new lipstick. The need to consume material items was replaced with the search for like-minded people, the confidence that comes with slowly getting to know who you really are, and the peace that comes along with a quiet practice.

Simply put, you just don’t want to buy ‘things’ anymore and what you do want cannot be purchased, even though you’d pay millions for it if you could.

You Become Truly Grateful For What You Already Have

Now, this may sound like an ‘easy’ one, but in my experiences with people in regards to this topic, I find that this is something that many people struggle with. Sure we all say how ‘blessed’ and grateful we are when it comes to the ordinary things: our job, our health, family, friends, all of our ‘stuff.’ But let me ask you…do you have a gratitude practice? Do you give thanks every day for these things that are in your life? Trust me when I say that once you begin an actual ritual around gratitude, things will change.

In an earlier post, I discuss being deliberate, redeeming your time in a way that you choose what to do with each and every minute. This is crucial. This is something I have picked up along the way, something I feel I have become very good at. In essence, we are discussing time management on a higher level.

When it comes to gratitude, we must become seriously deliberate. In my opinion, it works no other way. When you are giving praise and thanks for something or someone, you need to feel it in every ounce of your being, you need to radiate this emotion from your heart out to the world like rays from the sun. You need to become serious and emotional and deep. You need to deliberately thank God for whatever it is you are grateful for.

When you incorporate gratitude into your meditation practice, you will find that your perspective on your life changes, drastically. You learn gratitude. You become even more grateful than you ever imagined. You begin to view each and every person and thing in your life as something new. You find yourself falling back in love with certain people and personal possessions, while letting other things go.

It is amazing how once you fill up with gratitude, you automatically begin to desire less. You cling to less. You realize that your cup is already so full, that it is literally overflowing. That you’d rather fix the things in your life that are broken, restore life in the old, care for the things that have never given up on you, than ditch them for something twice as expensive, shiny and new.

Gratitude is a powerful, powerful thing.

And So It Is.

At the end of the day, if you find yourself playing with the idea of establishing a mediation practice in your life, all I can say is go for it! There are countless studies (like this one) that prove the benefits of mediation, so even as you get to where you think you want to be, know that you are doing yourself an overwhelmingly positive service just by starting to meditate. Begin with guided meditations from apps like Calm or Headspace and give thanks each day for the time you set aside for your practice. Be easy on yourself and trust that you will learn and notice changes in your life as a result of this practice. You will learn discipline and expansion, you will learn acceptance and truth. And all the while you’ll find yourself turning in more and more and spending less and less. It will be wonderful!

And so it is!
